'Celebration of Shakespeare's 400 th death anniversary at British Council Delhi'

The first name that pops in everyone's mind when they think of drama is Shakespeare! Why can't we think of any other playwright but him? The reasons can be numerous but if I may put my opinion forward, it the impact. The weight of his work through his plays could be seen in conventional dramatists of the day .Those who follow literature can say soliloquies owe much to Shakespeare. Samsara was invited on Saturday 23 April 2016,to one such event organised by British Council, where they were celebrating the 400 th death anniversary of much celebrated English poet, pre-eminent playwright and actor "Bard of Avon" – Shakespeare. It was a splendid show presented by English department from different universities, including reputable Delhi University and Ashoka University. Young artists from English and Hindi drama society presented four adaptations of Shakespearean plays. Two most applaud worthy adaptations were from Zakir Hussain College and a Punjabi drama theatre. The adapted plays were for 15 minutes each and lasted for an hour. The topics ranged from stab in the back to women emancipation. Theatre artists from Jesus and Mary depicted how heroines in Shakespearean plays were at the mercy of their matriarchal masters like Desdemona in Othello. Poetry slam was another part of the event where young poets recited their creations.
